Ben Turner – Commonwealth Games Champion

Ben Turner has been one of Australia’s top Olympic weightlifters over the past decade.

His involvement in the sport commenced in 2000 just prior to the Sydney Olympics, when he was attending Iona College in Brisbane.

Ben’s interest in weightlifting developed when he watched the greats Pyrros Dimas and Andrei Chemerkin smash world records at the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta.

During his time in weightlifting Ben has been involved in all areas of the sport.  Ben currently sits of the committee of his club, Cougars Weightlifting, and has had various roles during his time at the club.  Ben has served as Coach and Manager of the Queensland National Championships Team.

He is a National Grade Referee and holds a State Weightlifting/Sports Power Coach License 2, and is currently undertaking a Certificate IV in Fitness.

Ben’s passion other than lifting and competing is coaching others.  He coached Erika Yamasaki to the 2010 Commonwealth Games, where she broke an Australian and Oceania Record in the Women’s 48kg Division.  Ben is also the Head Coach of the North Brisbane Weightlifting Association based at Zillmere.

Ben’s enthusiasm along with his extensive knowledge and experience in weightlifting offers a very unique opportunity for those wanting to learn Olympic weightlifting.
